Cocktails for Parrots

In the area of Southern Brasil known as Serra do Mar (“Mountains of the Sea”), a cute little bird flaps its wings on the daily commute between the mountains and the coastal islands. It is the Red-Tailed Parrot, a multi-colored birdie whose red patch stirs up romantic action during breeding time. The parrot is a seed-disperser extraordinaire, moving seeds from the mountain forest to the islands, and helping preserve the biodiversity of our beloved Atlantic Rainforest.

But this important critter is also endangered due to heavy poaching. While each bird can fetch $2,500 for a poacher, 9 out of 10 birds die within days of captivity, due to poor conditions or fright. As neighbors and supporters, we at Novo Fogo are working to stop this crime and help the symbol of Atlantic Rainforest preservation survive.

As part of a program launched in July of 2011, bars around the country are creating cocktails named “The Red-Tailed Parrot” using the Novo Fogo Cachaças. For each such cocktail sold by a participating bar, we donate $0.50 to the Society for Wildlife Research in Brasil (SPVS, www.spvs.org.br). SPVS is a non-profit organization located in the Atlantic Rainforest that provides anti-poaching patrols and monitors the bird’s natural habitat.
